This
is the official Yamaha seat cowl for the 2004 Fazer.
It costs £145 and should be available for order through any
Yamaha official dealership. First
things first; I was far from impressed with this cowl, and actually took
it back and got a refund. The
unit attaches by three clips, one at the rear, and one at each side; a
small rubber strip is provided to prevent the rear clip from scratching
the bike’s plastic. The
plastic which the cowl is made from is fair quality, but the plastic
tubing which is over the end that butts against the rider is poor and
simply pushed on with nothing to hold it there.
The colour match on mine was perfectly accurate in terms of
shade, but not did not have exactly the same level of lustre as the rest
of the bike; although that’s being really picky. As
you can see from the pictures, the unit is actually a very poor fit and
the cut of the cowl over the seat is such that its profile does not
follow that of the bike and instead sits somewhat raised. While
you can see what the designers intentions were, with the cowl meeting
the line of the bikes rear, the actual implementation is so poor that
nothing like this is actually achieved. While the gap running down the
side which exposes the seat is a (questionable) design feature, there is
an inch gap at the rear of the cowl that can only be accredited to poor
design and workmanship, aggravated by the decision to use the protruding
rear clip. This gap can be
reduced by applying considerable pressure to the top of the cowl, and
thereby compressing the seat underneath, but why would that happen with
a cowl on the seat? The
only saving grace which I can see for this is the ease with which it is
fitted and removed; a simple matter of two bolts and take the seat off. All in all avoid, and wait for some aftermarket versions to appear. Andrew Fox - PoodyBoy 07/03/04
